Itinerary for Kashmir in December

Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar and City Tour
Your Kashmir tour starts with your arrival at Srinagar Airport. You can get a cab or private transport to reach your place of stay. Srinagar in December is very calm and less crowded with tourists, giving you ample opportunities to explore the city all by yourself.

Once you settle in, spend your first day exploring the city’s famous attractions. First, visit Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, the two most famous Mughal Gardens in Kashmir. These gardens, covered in snow, look especially beautiful in the winter months, offering an iconic view of the snow-capped mountains in the distance.

Then visit Dal Lake which is the prime attraction at Srinagar. At this time of the year December most of the lake may have frozen, and the tour will be on the frozen waters. It was quite an experience to drape across the serene Dal with snow-capped willow trees and snow-stuck mountains all around.

In the evening, take a walk through the old Srinagar markets. Do shopping for Kashmiri handicrafts, such as woolen shawls, carpets, and the traditional Pashmina. Have some Kashmiri Rogan Josh and Yakhni to warm you up.
Day 2: Sonamarg – The Snowy Retreat in the Valley
For an excursion on the second day head into Sonamarg, also know by the name “Meadow of Gold.” Such a beautiful valley in this hilly region. This snow-capped, scenic region is about 80-km from Srinagar. It features pristine white meadows and frozen rivers. It’s the hub for nature lovers and adventurists alike.

You can go on a snow trek to Thajiwas Glacier, which offers a magnificent view of snow-covered mountains and valleys. Snow trekking in Sonamarg is an unforgettable experience, with trails that are easily accessible even in winter. If you’re feeling more adventurous, try snowball fights or simply enjoy the serene atmosphere, perfect for photography.

For a more laid-back experience, you can enjoy a horseback ride through the snow-covered fields of Sonamarg, which will give you a chance to witness the untouched beauty of Kashmir’s winter landscape.

Day 3: Gulmarg – Skiing and Snowboarding Adventure
No visit to Kashmir in December is complete without a trip to Gulmarg, one of India’s most famous ski resorts. Known for its excellent skiing conditions, Gulmarg is a paradise for adventure enthusiasts, especially those looking to try skiing or snowboarding.

The Gulmarg Gondola is one of the highest cable car rides in the world, taking you through breathtaking views of the snow-covered mountains that surround it. Take this gondola ride all the way to Kongdoori Station and Apharwat Peak for skiing or snowboarding on pristine slopes.

If you are a beginner skier, do not worry! Some local operators offer skiing classes, and you can borrow all the equipment you want in Gulmarg. Gulmarg offers appropriate snow activities for both novice and expert skiers alike.

Day 4: Pahalgam – Winter Wonderland with a Chill
On day four, go to Pahalgam, a small town with a distance of around 95 km from Srinagar. In December, this place becomes a winter wonderland as snow falls here and the pine forests of the river are frozen partly.

Baisaran Valley is a must-visit in Pahalgam, where you can take a pony ride or go on a snow trek to get the best panoramic views of the snow-covered mountains. Pahalgam has many scenic spots, such as Aru Valley, which offers excellent snow trekking opportunities.

On evenings, one may go to one of the very comfortable local cafes or can go to town on own for enjoying the beauty of the frozen rivers and white snowed meadows.
Day 5: Locals Culture and Shopping End
Spend your fifth day inside the culture and traditions of Kashmir. Old city Srinagar is filled with old history, beautiful mosques, and colorful markets, best suited for a leisurely stroll. You can take a visit to the Shankaracharya Temple, with its panoramic views of the town and Dal Lake.

Other attractions include purchasing Kashmiri handicrafts, including Pashmina shawls, Kashmiri carpets, and Kashmir saffron. All these make great souvenirs or gifts. Finally, be sure to indulge in some of the special Wazwan dishes of Kashmir, including Rogan Josh, Gushtaba, and Kahwa.

Day 6: Awantipora Ruins & Betaab Valley
On day six, do a detour from the daily routine and visit the ruins of Awantipora, which is about 27 km from Srinagar. The ancient ruins of Awantipora date back to the 9th century and give one a glimpse into the rich cultural and historical past of Kashmir. During winter, snow around the ruins gives it a dramatic touch to the stone structures.

Later, visit the Betaab Valley, which shows the snow-covered peaks with meadows and rivers all around. Betaab Valley is popular for its bright green foliage during the summertime, but in winters, it becomes a silent escapade and is a better place for photography and winter treks.

Day 7: Departure
On your last day in Kashmir, take it easy with a relaxing morning in Srinagar. You could visit the Hazratbal Shrine, known for its peaceful surroundings and the famous relic of Prophet Muhammad, or explore more of the local markets.

Ensure that you have all your souvenirs packed before heading to the airport to make memories of the stunning winter landscape of Kashmir.
